Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is certainly one of the finest talents of present times but despite the growing excitement around teenage batting sensation, the youngster may have to wait longer for regular opportunities in India’s playing XI. Ahead of the five-match T20I series against New Zealand, visiting captain Shreyas Iyer has made it clear that the 15-year-old cricketer will need to be patient as India’s current opening combination continues to deliver.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi earned his maiden India call-up after enjoying a record-breaking IPL 2026 season. However, he has featured in only eight of the 21 T20I matches India have played so far this year.
The presence of established openers Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma has made it difficult for the teenager to secure a regular place in the team. Both players have been consistent with the bat and played important roles in India’s historic triumph at the 2026 T20 World Cup earlier this year.
Speaking on Wednesday, a day before the series opener, Shreyas Iyer stressed that Vaibhav Sooryavanshi should make the most of his time with the Indian team rather than expect an immediate place in the playing XI. He believes the young batter can benefit greatly from being part of the dressing room and learning from experienced players.

Shreyas Iyer also pointed out that Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is still very young and has plenty of time to establish himself in international cricket. With Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma performing consistently, there is currently no compelling reason to make an immediate change to the opening combination.
According to Shreyas Iyer, the ongoing tour will also provide Vaibhav Sooryavanshi with valuable experience of playing in overseas conditions. Becoming familiar with different pitches and playing environments could help him prepare better for future opportunities.
Shreyas Iyer added that the teenager could eventually use this experience to guide other Indian players who travel to New Zealand for the first time. Understanding the local conditions in advance could prove useful for both Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and his teammates during future tours.

India’s five-match T20I series against New Zealand therefore offers the youngster an opportunity to learn from the sidelines, understand international cricket more closely and prepare for the moment when his chance arrives.
Although Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s talent has generated considerable excitement, Shreyas Iyer’s comments suggest that India are keen to balance the development of their young prospect with the consistency of their established opening pair.
