There is an abandoned village by the name of Kuldhara which is around 15 kms from Jaisalmer and nobody even dares to visit the place during the night. Kuldhara along with 84 neighboring villages is said to be cursed by the people who used to live there and migrated, giving it a curse that if anybody tries to live in the village, he/she will die very soon.
Paliwal Brahmins started developing this area from 1291 and till 1800, they were well settled in these villages. However, in a night of the year 1825, every person from Kuldhara and 84 other villages left their homes. It was the night of Rakshabandhan and this is why some Paliwal Brahmins still don’t celebrate the festival of Rakhi.
As per the legend, the minister of the state Salim Singh fell in love with the village head’s daughter who was a Paliwal Brahmin and expressed his desire to marry her. But the village head refused to oblige him which made the minister angry and he warned the whole village of dire consequences if they did not let him marry the girl. Salim Singh threatened the villagers that he would impose huge taxes on them and make it difficult for them even to survive.
The villagers thought it better to leave the place rather than marrying the girl to the minister and they all just vanished.
If you take a look at the village, each sight of it has a ghostly appearance and it is difficult to even stand there for few moments alone! Have a look at the pics and you will understand what we want to convey….
Even tourists are not permitted to stay there during nighttime.
