Expectations are already sky-high for Mumbai Indians ahead of the IPL 2026 and one name continues to stand out — Jasprit Bumrah. Former India opener Aakash Chopra believes Jasprit Bumrah remains the team’s most reliable match-winner but he also pointed out a tricky problem MI must solve before the season begins.

Jasprit Bumrah had a strong IPL 2025, picking up 18 wickets in 12 matches at an impressive average of 17.56 and an economy rate of 6.68. His ability to control games with the ball makes him a key figure for MI, no matter the situation.
Aakash Chopra explained that Bumrah naturally carries a lot of responsibility because of his consistency. According to him, Jasprit Bumrah is the kind of bowler who delivers in almost every match, picks up crucial wickets and keeps the opposition under pressure. This also means his four overs are extremely valuable, as they are carefully used across different phases of the innings — powerplay, middle overs and death.
He also made it clear that even if other bowlers perform well or return to full fitness, expectations from Jasprit Bumrah won’t reduce. MI will still depend heavily on him.

At the same time, Aakash Chopra discussed the pace attack combination. He suggested that if players like Trent Boult and Deepak Chahar are fit, MI would want to use them with the new ball. He added that Shardul Thakur is a solid backup option but a fully fit Chahar is likely to be preferred.
Along with Jasprit Bumrah, Trent Boult, Deepak Chahar and Hardik Pandya could form MI’s main pace attack. Aakash Chopra also mentioned Corbin Bosch as a strong all-round option waiting for his chance. However, the real issue lies in balancing overseas players, as not everyone can be included in the playing XI.
MI will begin their IPL 2026 campaign against Kolkata Knight Riders on March 29 at Wankhede Stadium. They had reached Qualifier 2 in the IPL 2025 but lost to Punjab Kings.

Aakash Chopra also spoke about the batting order. He expects Rohit Sharma and Quinton de Kock to return as openers, a pair that helped MI win titles in the past.
However, fitting players like Will Jacks, Sherfane Rutherford and Corbin Bosch into the lineup create a selection headache. Aakash Chopra explained that while Sherfane Rutherford offers finishing ability and an extra bowling option, Will Jacks has also shown that he can play a similar role.
He further added that MI would likely want at least two overseas bowlers. Trent Boult is almost certain to play, while one among Mitchell Santner and Allah Ghazanfar could take the second spot, along with Corbin Bosch in contention.

In simple terms, Aakash Chopra described MI’s situation as having too many good options a great problem but still a difficult one. The team has the resources to succeed but choosing the right combination will be the real challenge.
