Released in 2013, Aamir Khan & Abhishek Bachchan starrer Dhoom 3 became a high-octane blockbuster under the direction of Vijay Krishna Acharya and the production of Aditya Chopra. The movie also starred Katrina Kaif and Uday Chopra in leading roles and in the third part, the film expanded the popular action-crime franchise into international territory.
But according to Aamir Khan, one key emotional element never made it to the final cut, a subplot involving Jai Dixit’s wife Sweety played by Rimi Sen in the first two installments.
In an interview, Aamir Khan shared that the original script for Dhoom 3 included a significant role for Sweety who was not only meant to return but was also central to Jai Dixit’s emotional arc. He revealed that in the initial version of the film, the story was set to open with Sweety seeking a divorce, frustrated by Jai’s absence from her life.
As a dedicated Mumbai Police officer, Jai often missed important occasions like Karva Chauth and her birthday, which left her feeling neglected. Aamir Khan believed that this setup gave the story more depth and made Jai’s character more relatable.
Describing the scene progression, Aamir said that Jai was supposed to try and mend his strained marriage by finally planning their long-overdue honeymoon. But just as they were about to embark on the trip, Jai would be called to action with an urgent assignment in Chicago. In the planned sequence, he would secretly meet the police commissioner in an airport washroom for a briefing on the case, just before boarding the flight. The narrative twist, Aamir explained, was that Sweety was fully aware of the mission and supported Jai, even encouraging him not to return until the thief was caught.
In the film’s final version, none of this subplot was included. Aamir revealed that both Aditya Chopra and Vijay Krishna Acharya felt the storyline was not essential to the core plot and decided to remove it entirely, even before any scenes were shot.
While they believed it did not serve the film’s primary action focus, Aamir strongly disagreed, feeling it was a missed opportunity to create a more emotionally resonant story. He expressed that the complete absence of Jai’s wife left a void in the narrative, removing a human connection that had existed since the first film.
For those unfamiliar, Dhoom 3 is the third chapter in the high-adrenaline Dhoom series. Along with its stylish action and dramatic twists, the film is known for introducing Aamir Khan in a double role opposite Katrina Kaif’s acrobat-thief character and features strong performances from Abhishek Bachchan and Uday Chopra as the police duo Jai and Ali. But as Aamir’s revelation suggests, it could have been a very different film, one that blended emotional stakes with spectacle more seamlessly.
