Reflecting on the deeply emotional experience of separation, Aamir Khan acknowledged that marriage in India is considered a sacred and serious commitment. He said that when a marriage breaks, it affects not just the couple but their families too. Sharing his own experience, he explained that though he had been married to Reena and later to Kiran, they eventually realised they could no longer continue as a couple. He emphasised that the decision of divorce was not made lightly and it brought pain to everyone involved. According to him, despite society’s discomfort with divorce, it was more honest to accept the reality than to pretend everything was fine.

Aamir Khan expressed that maintaining the facade of a happy marriage would have been misleading, not just to others but to themselves. He stated that he and Kiran could have chosen to stay married in name only while living separate lives behind the scenes but that would have been dishonest. He firmly believes in presenting the truth, even when it’s difficult.

In a moment tinged with humour, he admitted that while he may not have succeeded at marriage, he jokingly considered himself successful at divorce.

Despite his personal experiences, Aamir maintained that he still deeply respects the institution of marriage. He described it as a beautiful feeling and expressed his hope that everyone has the opportunity to experience the love and connection that marriage can offer.

Aamir was first married to Reena Dutta, with whom he shares two children — Ira and Junaid. He later tied the knot with filmmaker Kiran Rao and together they co-parent their son Azad.
