AB de Villiers remains one of the most loved cricketers in the history of the Indian Premier League. The South African genius, often called “Mr. 360” for his ability to play shots all around the field, carved a special place in the hearts of fans, especially those of Royal Challengers Bengaluru. After retiring from all forms of cricket in 2021, he continues to be linked with the league and his words often spark excitement about a possible return in a new capacity.
Recently, AB de Villiers admitted that while taking up a full-time professional role in the IPL is no longer possible, he might still be involved in the future in a different way. He explained that committing to an entire season is difficult for him now but he has not ruled out contributing to the tournament again. He said that his connection with Bengaluru is permanent and if there is ever a role for him when the time is right, it will definitely be with the RCB franchise.
AB de Villiers began his IPL journey in 2008 with Delhi Daredevils, now Delhi Capitals, where he played for three seasons. His move to Bengaluru in 2011 changed everything, as he became a pillar of the side for the next decade. His aggressive batting, consistency and match-winning performances made him one of the most iconic overseas players in the league.
For Bengaluru, he scored 4,522 runs in 157 matches at an average of 41.1, striking at 158.33. His tally included two centuries and 37 half-centuries, underlining his importance to the team’s batting lineup. One of his most memorable feats came in 2016, when he partnered Virat Kohli in a record 229-run stand for the second wicket against Gujarat Lions, the highest partnership in the IPL history. That same season, he piled up 687 runs, showcasing his brilliance.
Across his IPL career which spanned 184 games for Delhi and Bengaluru, AB de Villiers scored 5,162 runs at a strike rate of 151.68, with three centuries and 40 fifties. Beyond the numbers, however, it was his flair, innovation and ability to change games single-handedly that made him a fan favourite.
Though his playing days are over, AB de Villiers made it clear that his bond with RCB and the IPL remains strong. While a full season commitment may no longer be possible, fans can still hope to see him return in some role in the future, carrying forward his enduring connection with the Bengaluru franchise.
