When the debate around the greatest T20 cricketer of all times comes up, names like Chris Gayle and Rashid Khan usually dominate the conversation. Chris Gayle remains the highest run-scorer in the format, while Rashid Khan has set records with an incredible 702 wickets in 519 matches. But former South African captain AB de Villiers has taken a completely different route with his pick and it’s turning heads.

AB de Villiers, widely regarded as one of the greatest cricketers ever, didn’t choose either of these legends. Instead, he named India and Mumbai Indians star Jasprit Bumrah as his T20 Greatest Of All Times.
In a conversation shared by sports presenter Nikhil Uttamchandani, AB de Villiers admitted his answer might surprise fans. He described it as “ironic” rather than controversial, before confidently backing Jasprit Bumrah. What stood out most for him was Bumrah’s consistency and ability to deliver under pressure in any situation, whether with the new ball, old ball or even in a Super Over.
AB de Villiers highlighted how Jasprit Bumrah can change games single-handedly, making him a dependable match-winner. His ability to take wickets at crucial moments, regardless of the stage of the innings, is what sets him apart in the shortest format.

Jasprit Bumrah’s numbers back up the praise. Since his debut in 2013, he has played 270 T20 matches and taken 345 wickets. He is also India’s second highest wicket-taker in T20 internationals, with 121 wickets in 95 matches. For Mumbai Indians in the IPL, he holds the record for most wickets, with 183 scalps in 145 games.
His impact isn’t limited to statistics alone. Jasprit Bumrah played a key role in India’s victory at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, where he was named the Player of the Tournament. He continued his dominance in the 2026 edition as well, finishing as a joint-highest wicket-taker.
In the final against New Zealand at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Jasprit Bumrah delivered a match-winning spell of 4 for 15 in four overs. His performance helped bowl out New Zealand for 159 during a 256-run chase, sealing a massive 96-run win for India.

Looking ahead, Jasprit Bumrah will return to action in the Indian Premier League 2026 season starting March 28. He is also on the brink of another milestone, becoming the first fast bowler to take 200 wickets for a single team in the IPL history.
Clearly, for AB de Villiers, greatness in T20 cricket isn’t just about records, it’s about impact, consistency and delivering when it matters the most.
Well, we certainly agree with AB de Villiers, what about you?
