Afg Coach Trott Says They Have No Scaring History Like SA Which Makes Them More Dangerous

There is no doubt that within few years, the Afghanistan cricket team has proved themselves as a force to reckon with. In the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024, they have managed to enter the semi-finals of the tournament and this is the first time that they are in the top four of a big tournament.

This is definitely a big achievement for them as just 14 years back, they debuted in the T20 World Cup and their head coach Jonathan Trott has played an important role in the development of Afghanistan cricket.

Afghanistan will face South Africa in the first semi-final tomorrow and it will be played at Brian Lara Cricket Academy, Trinidad and Tobago. While Afghanistan will be playing the semi-final of the T20 World Cup for the first time, South Africa has a history of losing in knock-out and big matches because of which they have been named as chokers by some cricket fans.

While addressing a press conference, coach Jonathan Trott stated that they have no scaring history so they will give their all in the match; for them, it is a new challenge which makes them more lethal and it will pressurize the opposition. In his words, “We go into the semi-final with no scarring or no history with regards to semi-finals. This is uncharted territory for us. We’re just going to go out there and give it our all. There’s no preconceived ideas on it all, or history of failure or success in semi-finals in past years. For us it’s a new challenge and I think that makes us dangerous in the semi-finals as a side with nothing to lose and obviously a lot of pressure on the opposition.”

South Africa and Afghanistan have faced each other two times in the T20 World Cups and both the times, the Proteas have emerged as winners, first in 2010 in Barbados (Proteas won by 59 runs) and in 2016 in Mumbai (Proteas won by 37 runs).

Though South Africa has won the all the matches in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024, there have been instances when they were on the edge of losing the matches including the one-run victory over Nepal which could have been a great upset if Nepal had been a little lucky.

Talking about his journey in the Afghanistan camp, Jonathan Trott said, “When I took over, I was astounded by the talent that I saw.”

He added, “There was certain rawness to it all and no real structure to how the game was played or thought about. I’ve just tried to add here and there. At no stage have I tried to clip anybody’s wings. I’m just trying to make the bow of the arrow even stronger so that they can go for longer, win more games and shoot for the stars even further away.”
