Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan’s career has been defined not just by his towering talent but also by the deep bonds he has built along the way. Not every Bollywood blockbuster begins with a perfect script, some are born from friendship. That’s exactly what happened with one of the unforgettable films of Amitabh Bachchan entitled Do Aur Do Paanch. When the story was first narrated to him, Amitabh was not convinced and turned down the offer but fate had other plans.

Things changed when director Rakesh Kumar, one of the closest friends of Amitabh Bachchan, joined the project. Their creative bond had already produced successful films like Khoon Pasina and Mr. Natwarlal. Trusting that friendship, Amitabh agreed to take on the film, not because of the story but because he believed in Rakesh Kumar’s vision.

Released in 1980, Do Aur Do Paanch turned out to be a light-hearted action-comedy that still brings smiles to audiences’ faces decades later. It was not just Amitabh’s charm that worked, the film boasted a star-studded cast including Shashi Kapoor, Hema Malini and Parveen Babi, all of whom added their own magic to the narrative.

Interestingly, the film was made on a modest budget of Rs 1.5 crore and ended up earning around Rs 3 crore at the box office. But its success didn’t come instantly. When it first hit theatres, the film struggled to find an audience and was even labeled a flop. Slowly, however, word-of-mouth began to spread. Audiences fell in love with the playful chemistry between Amitabh and Shashi Kapoor, a duo that had already delivered multiple hits together and the film’s fortunes began to change.
