The Indian cricket team has managed to secure a spot in the Super Eight by winning all the three league matches that it has played till now and hopefully they will come back with a trophy and bring an end to the ICC trophy drought.
The Indian team will certainly like to give a perfect farewell gift to their head coach Rahul Dravid whose tenure will end with India’s T20 World Cup journey. Rahul Dravid’s coaching tenure ended with the ODI World Cup 2023 but the BCCI convinced him to continue till the T20 World Cup 2024.
Tenure of the new head coach will start from 1 July 2024 and though the BCCI had invited applications for the post of the head coach, the board hasn’t given any update regarding the process of selection till now.
As per various reports, the former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir is almost finalized as the new head coach of the Indian team and the announcement regarding this can be made anytime.
Gautam Gambhir became the best candidate for this job after the IPL team Kolkata Knight Riders won their 3rd title, i.e., the IPL 2024 trophy, under his mentorship. Interestingly, KKR won their earlier two titles under Gautam Gambhir’s captaincy in 2012 and 2014.
There are some former cricketers who feel that Gautam Gambhir may not be the right person for the position of the head coach of team India because it is full of star players and there is a difference between handling an IPL team and a national team.
However, the former Indian cricketer Anil Kumble feels that Gautam Gambhir is a worthy candidate but he needs to be given some time.
During a cricket chat show, Anil Kumble said, “You will have to give him time. He is certainly capable. We have seen Gautam handle teams. He has been captain for India, for his franchise, for Delhi. He has all the credentials to be that. But, India team coaching is slightly different. You have to give him time to settle in. And like I mentioned, in case he does take up the job, he will have the task of looking at not just the current lot but also the future of Indian cricket.”
He further added, “You have been a part of the system in some form or the other, whether you are a coach or a player, you’ve played with them or been associated with the team in some form or the other. I don’t think it certainly matters that much. What you need to certainly look at is the kind of candidature that you are going to pick and not necessarily go with whether this particular player or this particular coach has had a background of playing with the players and then that sort of coming in the way or not.”
Anil Kumble has also served as the head coach of the Indian cricket team in 2016-17 but his tenure was not a pleasant one and he bid goodbye with bitter feelings.
Anil Kumble concluded by talking about the importance of selecting the right candidate. Here’s what he said, “I think, it’s important that you need to choose the right candidate in terms of what they can bring it to the Indian team and someone who has the kind of stature and the credibility to handle certain situations in the game and someone who takes those calls.”
