The Indian cricket team is certainly going through a critical phase and there are rumours as per which there is tension among the captain, coach and the selectors. However, the BCCI Vice-President Rajeev Shukla denied all such reports and rumours when he addressed the media on Monday, he said that there is no discord between India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Rohit Sharma. He also extended support to Rohit, who is experiencing a challenging period in his career.
India faced a 1-3 defeat against Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, with Rohit scoring just 31 runs in the series. His poor form led him to voluntarily step down from the playing eleven for the final Test in Sydney. Speculation emerged about tensions between him and Gambhir, as well as overall dissatisfaction in the dressing room due to the struggles of other senior players, including Virat Kohli.
Rajeev Shukla firmly dismissed these rumours, stating there was no conflict between the coach, captain, or selectors, emphasising that such stories were baseless. Reports suggesting that Gambhir had pressured senior players to deliver or risk being sidelined were also denied.
He further clarified that Rohit had not insisted on retaining the captaincy, emphasising that temporary dips in form are a natural part of the game. Rohit, acknowledging his struggles, chose to exclude himself from the fifth Test.
A recent review meeting was held to evaluate the team’s performance and plan the next steps for improvement. The selection for the Champions Trophy squad is expected to be finalised soon, with selectors awaiting updates on the fitness of key pacer Jasprit Bumrah, who sustained a back injury during the Australia tour. The final team announcement is anticipated around January 18 or 19.
