The cybercrimes are taking place at a very high rate in the country and what is making it difficult for people to save themselves is the manner in which fraudsters are deriving new ways to scam people.
Recently, a person from Harlur, Bengaluru, fell a prey to a fraudster and lost almost Rs. 2 lakh when he tried to a buy a pre-owned bike from a website. The name of the person is Rajasekhar and on 26 July, he came across an ad of a bike which was priced at Rs. 32K. The seller portrayed himself as an Army officer and identified himself as Lakshay Khanna and in order to gain trust of Rajasekhar, he also shared his Aadhaar details.
As per the reports, Lakshay gave Rajsekhar the phone number of a person named Manjeet Singh and promised that the bike will be delivered by 28 July and he asked Rajsekhar to pay Rs. 1000 as transportation charges. However, later on, Rajsekhar was asked to pay Rs. 7200 as GST and then was asked to pay Rs 7,000, Rs 200 and Rs 15,000.
Rajsekhar made all the payments through a UPI app using the QR code provided by Lakshay Khanna and then the fraudster made Rajsekhar make multiple transactions of Rs 18K, Rs 32K, Rs 10K, Rs 4K, Rs 5K, Rs 32K and Rs 13K and Rajsekhar ended up paying Rs. 196,002.
As Rajsekhar got to understand that he had been cheated, he went to Bellandur police station and filed a case against Lakshay Khanna and Manjeet Singh. Police has registered a case under Sections 66(C) and 66(D) of the Information Technology Act 2000 along with Section 420 of the IPC. Rajsekhar told the media that though the case has been registered by police, neither of the accused has been caught by them till now.
It is very surprising that the person went on to pay almost Rs. 2 lakh for a bike which was priced at Rs. 32K. We request our readers to be cautious while making online purchases and make financial transactions on reputed websites only.
