Earlier, tanks, rivers, ponds etc. were the main water bodies. And as opposed to present day coins that are made up of steel, in ancient days, they were made up of copper. Copper would help the dust in settling down and would bring the drinking water up. Also, it was an essential element that was needed for the body and hence, our ancestors introduced this custom, so that there is a daily intake.
