This is not a single case of such scam, as we have quite often heard the news of credit as well as debit card scams. However, it teaches us a great lesson so that no one now commits the mistake of giving card details to just any caller who pretends to be from the concerned department or office.
Oldmonq, Reddit user, published a post in which he narrated the comprehensive description as to how credit card details of his father were achieved by scammers over a call. It so happened that he received a fake call who said himself to be of a member of “debit card verification team”. Since Oldmonq had been alerted by a message containing One Time Password (used for verifying the transaction not made by him), he saved money of his father. Later he received a phone call from them and recorded. It’s really commendable on the part of scammers that on Truecaller, they got their no. shown as “RBI Verification Department”.
Well, even after knowing that it’s a fake call, he did not let the caller know this and kept on talking to him as if he really considered true whatever the caller was saying. Just to play further with the scammer, he provided him details of an expired card of HDFC, swapping some information. As soon as the caller got the number, all of a sudden his tone changed and his words were, “ab dekh main yahin se transaction karta hu , teri MC#”
