The buildup to the IPL 2026 has already created a storm, thanks to one of the most eventful retention and trade windows in recent years. Teams made bold decisions, moved long-standing players and completely restructured their squads ahead of the mega auction. What followed was a mix of surprises, emotional exits and aggressive planning for the season ahead.

The biggest headline came from a massive trade involving Sanju Samson and Ravindra Jadeja. Samson who spent a decade with Rajasthan Royals has now moved to Chennai Super Kings in a move that shocked fans. In exchange, CSK sent their senior all-rounder Jadeja along with England pacer Sam Curran to the Royals. For Chennai, Sanju Samson offers a strong batting core and leadership option; for Rajasthan, Ravindra Jadeja brings experience, finishing ability and world-class fielding, while Sam Curran strengthens their bowling and lower-order hitting.

But the shake-ups didn’t stop there. Mohammed Shami, one of India’s most dependable fast bowlers, was traded to Lucknow Super Giants. The franchise also picked up Arjun Tendulkar, giving the young left-arm pacer a chance to find more game time and grow under a fresh setup. Meanwhile, Mumbai Indians secured Shardul Thakur, adding a handy fast bowler who can also contribute with the bat — something MI has been looking to improve in the last few seasons.

Across teams, the retentions made one thing clear: franchises are looking for balance rather than star power alone. Many overseas names, domestic players and even seasoned performers were released to free up purse space. Teams now want all-rounders who can perform in multiple roles, pace bowlers who can adapt to various conditions, and reliable finishers who can steady a chase or push up the scoring rate.

This year’s retention and trade window also showed a shift in mindset. Franchises are no longer afraid to let go of long-time faces if it means strengthening the squad for the future. The mix of big trades and quiet, smart pick-ups has already set the stage for one of the most exciting auctions in years.

As the cricket world waits for the final squads to take shape, one thing is certain, the IPL 2026 is already off to a thrilling start and the season promises new combinations, fresh rivalries and plenty of surprises.
