Bihar does not have a good reputation when it comes to education and we often come across incidents in which students have been caught cheating and even the school officials are said to have been involved in the act.
However, the case is not the same this year, as merely 35.25% or 4.37 lakh students out of total 12.40 lakh were able to pass the BSEB (Bihar School Examination Board) examination of Class 12th, as revealed by officials on Tuesday. In the 12th Science exam, just 30.11% students have been passed.
Talking about last year, 62.19% or 7.18 lakh students out of total 11.55 lakh passed the exams. As of 12th Science exams, 67.06% cleared it last year while 89.32% passed the examination in the year 2015. Last year, 80.87% students passed in 12th Commerce whereas 56.73% cleared 12th Arts or humanities; however, 37.13% passed in 12th Arts while 73.76% cleared 12th Commerce this year.

Toppers of Class 12th in every steam will be awarded Rs. 1 lakh in addition to a Kindle e-reader as well as a laptop. For the 2nd and 3rd rank holders, the gadgets will be the same but the prize money will be Rs 75,000 and Rs 50,000, respectively. That’s not all! The 4th & 5th toppers will also get a laptop along with Rs 10,000.
According to RK Mahajan, Principal secretary of education department, strict measures, which have been brought into play by the board when the exams were conducted as well as at the time of answer sheets’ evaluation, could be the reason of such low figures. He added that the students who could not clear the examination must not be dejected and make an attempt to clear it next time with more dedication.
Anand Kishor, the chairperson of BSEB, is of the opinion that there may be various reasons behind this miserable performance of students, such as the examination forms were submitted online, the answer sheets which were provided had bar codes, exams were conducted very strictly and last but not the least, tabulation was done by computers. The scope of unfair practices reduced to a great extent this time with the adoption of these measures.
