Currently, the beef ban issue is one of the most sensitive issues in India. Anyone who has commented on this issue has faced the wrath of the people of India. Entrepreneur Keyur Joshi decided to state his opinions on this issue, unfortunate for him, it turned out to be a great mistake for the co-founder and CEO of MakeMyTrip. He questioned the steps taken by the BJP led government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on beef ban. He posted two tweets on the issue. Twiteratti reacted to this very strongly and things turned really bad. Someone came up with #BoycottMakeMyTrip campaign and it started trending in large numbers. People uploaded screenshots of uninstalling the app and the company lost many users.

Here are the screenshots of his tweets.

His first tweet stated that he is a strong supporter of Narendra Modi, and has been a vegan for his entire life. But he will eat Beef only in India in order to show his support for freedom of food.

“#Beefban I am a strong supporter of @narendramodi & a vegetarian for life. But I will now eat Beef only in India to support freedom of food.”

It was followed by another tweet which stated that he was utterly disappointed with the BJP led government and Narendra Modi and said that they can’t decide what people will eat.

“#beefban if Hinduism takes away right to choice of food, i rather not be a Hindu. @narendramodi @BJP4India cant decide what people eat,”

This is when everyone started uninstalling the app and introduced the #BoycottMakeMyTrip campaign. Some people are cancelling their trips and have decided to go with another service provider. The damage done to the company seems significant enough to affect them.

After all the chaos MakeMyTrip decided to take steps to control the damage done to the company. They tweeted that all the views expressed by Keyur Joshi are his personal views and doesn’t reflect the company’s view. It also added that Keyur Joshi is no longer an employee of MMT.

Here is the statement made by MakeMyTrip.

This is not the first time when such a thing has happened in India. People boycotted Snapchat when Snapchat CEO was accused to have called India a poor country, in another instance, people boycotted Snapdeal because their brand ambassador Aamir Khan made a comment about India being insecure.

In this scenario, we think that MakeMyTrip is not at fault and they certainly doesn’t deserve to be boycotted. As the company stated through their Twitter account, the views of Keyur Joshi are his personal views and the company shouldn’t be held liable for this. Moreover, they said that Keyur is no longer a part of the company (we are not sure about the legitimacy of this information about Keyur’s employment status). So, boycotting MMT is not the solution here.

What do you think about it guys? Do you think MMT should be punished for what Keyur did? Do let us know about your views on this!
