According to a recent report, ecommerce giant Flipkart is planning to shut down its website and will switch over to app-only format. The decision was followed after Myntra recently said it would shut its web portal and adopt mobile-only format.

Michael Adnani, the vice-president of Flipkart, said that last year the mobile drew them only 6% of the total traffic but now the traffic from mobile is almost 10 times. This shows how the mobile phone is important for consumers.

The increase in traffic on the app will definitely result in the increase in the rate of transactions and therefore, Flipkart has decided to switch over to app-only platform. Flipkart is being used by over 80 million users. It has nearly 30,000 vendors dealing in above 20 million products.

India ranks third on the list of Internet markets in the world with China ranking first and US in the second place. Smartphones are getting cheaper these days and 6-7 million of them are being shipped to India.

Flipkart ships around 8 million products every month and two-thirds of its business is contributed by users in small cities and towns. Myntra’s was profiting more from the app when compared to Flipkart, so it decided to switch over all its operations to app-only platform from May 1st.
