After India’s dramatic batting collapse against South Africa on Sunday, supporters of Sanju Samson flooded the Internet demanding the wicketkeeper-batter’s return to the playing XI. Chasing a challenging target of 188, India’s innings fell apart quickly, crashing to 88 for 8 in just 15 overs against a disciplined South African bowling attack.
The damage was done early. The top three – Ishan Kishan, Abhishek Sharma and Tilak Varma, failed to provide a solid start. Together, they managed only 16 runs as India slipped to 31 for 3 inside the Powerplay. While Abhishek Sharma showed some intent with a quick 15 off 12 balls, Ishan Kishan and Tilak Varma struggled badly, departing for 0 and 1 respectively.
The lack of resistance at the top left the middle order with too much to do and the chase never truly recovered. The Indian team got all out at the score of 111 in the 19th over and suffered a humiliating defeat by 76 runs in their first match of the Super8.
With the team’s combination once again under scrutiny, many fans are urging the management to rethink their selection strategy ahead of the upcoming matches and give Sanju Samson another chance.
