“We only get a ‘parantha’ and tea as breakfast and this is without any pickle or vegetables… we slog for 11 hours and at times, we have to stand throughout the duty hours. For lunch, we get ‘dal’ (pulses) which only has ‘haldi’ (turmeric) and salt … With roti. This is the quality of the food we get … How can a jawan do his duty?”

BSF dismissed Tej Bahadur Yadav after the staff court of inquiry (SCoI) submitted its report, finding the soldier guilty of making false charges.

A senior officer said,

“The action of dismissal of the jawan has been taken under the Border Security Force Act that is applicable to all the personnel serving in the paramilitary force. Yadav has been found guilty on certain charges of indiscipline including uploading the said video in violation of laid down procedures and rules. He has an option to appeal against the verdict within three months time.”

The officer added,

“During the proceedings, it was charged that he indulged in an act prejudicial to good order and discipline of the force in which he made false allegations on social media regarding the quality of food and did not adhere to formal grievance redressal mechanism of the force. It was also alleged in the court of inquiry that he neglected to obey general orders of the force in which he carried two mobile phones while on operational duty against the SOP and also posted photographs in uniform on social media in contravention of instructions.”

After Yadav’s video went viral on the social media networks, the PMO asked a detailed report from BSF and Union Home Ministry on the matter.

A PIL has also been filed in the Delhi High Court in order to ask the court to direct the government to depute high rank officers for supervising the quality of food that is being served to the soldiers on the LoC.

The court asked for an explanation from BSF and other paramilitary forces on the allegations made regarding the bad quality of food. It also asked BSF to submit the inquiry report and tell about the steps that it would take with regard to the allegations.

After the dismissal of Yadav, a video was released by Sharmila, wife of Tej Bahadur, in which she expressed her dejection over the judgement.
