A 30-yr tea seller has been arrested from Kolkata by the Powai police on charges of faking his identity and forcing a 27-yr lady to be in relationship with him. Not only this, he has also been blackmailing her between last October and December. He will be presented in front of the magistrate, Andheri court on Wednesday.
The name of the tea seller is Gaurav Shaw and he met the woman in October 2016 through a matrimonial website where he posed to be Kolkata’s top businessman. He has also shot a “nude video” of the victim during one of their video chats on Skype and threatened her to upload it online if she stops getting physically intimate with him. Gaurav regularly paid visits to the victim in this two-month period.
She ultimately filed a case against Gaurav on 12th Dec, 2016 with Powai police. In her complaint, she stated,
“Shaw approached me with a marriage proposal and gained my trust by claiming to belong to a leading business family of Kolkata. He even claimed to own a flat in Powai. He frequently met me between October and December and captured my video on Skype. When I stumbled upon his real business, he began to blackmail me by threatening to circulate the video online.”
Gaurav may have posed as a top businessman but in reality, he is a tea-vendor and his father sells soaps.
The police told that whenever the victim asked him to arrange a meeting with his parents, he used to talk himself pretending to be his father and used to assure her family that they were serious about the marriage.
A police team was sent to Kolkata to catch Gaurav and they got much needed help from the Chitpur police in their operation. In the words of Subhankar Sinha Sarkar, deputy commissioner of police (north Kolkata),
“We tendered our support to Mumbai police’s assistant inspector Nadvinkeri and his team in taking the help of Chitpur police here in north Kolkata. Shaw was arrested after a raid was carried out at his B K Pal Avenue residence. The team produced Shaw before Sealdah court there on Sunday with a prayer for four days of transit remand. The court allowed the same.”
Cases have been filed against Gaurav under IPC sections 417 for cheating, 354 for outraging the modesty of a woman, 354C for voyeurism. Gaurav’s cellphone will be sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory to get the video so that charges under IT act can also be pressed on him.
