The Changing Expectations of Today’s Garba-Goers

Reading Time: 3 mins read
There was a time when the success of a Garba night could be measured in sore feet. How long did you play garba? How many rounds did you survive? How late did you stay? Those things still matter. Ask anyone in Ahmedabad and they will tell you that the moment the music picks up, the taali begins and the circle starts moving, very little else matters. Yet the evening around that circle has quietly changed. For many Garba-goers today, the night begins well before the first beat and continues long after the last one. The outfit, the setting, the food, the people, the photographs, the little comforts in between and the overall mahol have all become part of the memory. This is where newer formats of Navratri are finding their place. The Sheri Affair Navratri Ahmedabad, a SamRatri experience, is one such example. Held on the second night of Navratri, the event has built its identity around traditional Garba while giving equal attention to aesthetics, rituals and hospitality. Its 2026 edition, Safed Amdavad, will take place on October 12 and turn its attention towards the city that hosts it. The idea is rooted in Safed. Inspired by Mata Brahmacharini, worshipped on the second day of Navratri, the colour represents peace, purity, serenity and devotion. For The Sheri Affair, Safed has become an identity that has stayed consistent even as the story of each edition has changed from Yeh Wala Safed to Safed Ishq, Safed Parindey and Safed Heroes. This year, the story becomes Safed Amdavad. The shift is interesting because the Garba itself remains familiar. There is music. There is dance. There are traditional rituals. What changes is the space around them. The Sheri Affair brings details such as premium coffee and foot massages into the evening, alongside its visual curation and hospitality. It treats the pauses between the dancing as part of the night too. The recurring philosophy, #SpreadSafed For Love & Peace, gives the visual identity a cultural meaning beyond a dress code. And perhaps that is what today's Garba-goer is beginning to notice. People still want that one song that makes everyone jump into the circle. They still want to meet their friends, dance without checking the time and lose themselves in the music. They simply seem to care a little more about everything that happens around those moments. For Sam Modi, Founder & CEO of The Sheri Affair, and Niti Pancholi, its Co-Founder and a Garba enthusiast since childhood, that space between tradition and contemporary experience has shaped the event over the years. With Safed Amdavad, the focus now moves closer to the city itself, its heritage, its cultural identity and the warmth of its people. Perhaps that is the real change in the modern Garba night. The dance remains the reason people come together. The experience is becoming the reason they remember it.
