Yesterday, we reported about CM of UP, Yogi Adityanath scrapping the caste-based reservation system (SC, ST and OBC) in dental colleges and private medical colleges there.
India Today was first to cover this news and then every media house followed. RVCJ is not a full-fledge media house so RVCJ depends upon these big media houses for announcements!
Moreover, since everyone covered this news, there was no reason for us to believe that this news was “Fake”. Soon, we saw these headlines all over the internet. In short, just because one media house reported it as a fact, others copied it. Being a 3rd party media house, we relied on India Today and covered the news; we never knew that even big media houses report half-baked facts.
Then comes another report – Times Of India Report!
Today, TOI came up with the “Clarification” of this news. It reported that this reservation system was never a part of private medical colleges. Check the screenshot;
Dr VN Tripathi, director general medical education, was quoted as saying,
“It is wrong to say that rules of reservation have been scrapped from the private medical and dental colleges. Reservation was never a part of the admission process in private sector medical and dental colleges as per the prevalent policy made in 2006. There has been no change in any policy whatsoever.”
After this news was out, others followed once again. Instead of believing on the media houses, we thought of doing our research.
RVCJ Research
Firstly, let us clarify that there was no such official announcement from Yogi Aditynath. Big media houses reported it as an “Official announcement” and it soon spread like wildfire. To verify the news, we called up private medical colleges of UP too. Unfortunately, no one had any clue whatsoever. Some were so confused that they didn’t even know what Yogi banned, quota or reservation marks.
UP conducts UPCMET for admission to Government colleges as well as Private colleges and UPCMET has marks based reservation at every step;
Eligibility Criteria – Candidates must have passed 10+2 level examination of UP Board / ISC / CBSE or its equivalent from any recognised Board / University with English as a subject; securing minimum 50% ( 45% in case of SC / ST ) marks on average in Physics, Chemistry & Biology ( including practical examination ) taken together.
Cut-off – In order to qualify UPCMET 2016, candidates belonging to unreserved categories have to score a minimum of 50% marks, whereas, candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC categories have to obtain a total of 40% marks in the entrance exam.

The Cut off marks will be different for different categories. General, OBC, SC and ST cut off list will be different.
This cut off or UPCMET qualification even holds true for Private colleges. So there indeed is category wise reservation according to marks in UPCMET but when we researched about the Quota Percentage in Private colleges then we got to know there is no PERCENTAGE QUOTA as such.
Now no one including media & private medical colleges know what exactly has been done. When we checked official Twitter handles (Except Media), there was no such news regarding abolishing reservation. So was it cooked up story by Media and nothing happened? And even if that news was true then there is no mention about the details whether reservation (category wise marks) is also abolished or only QUOTA (percentage wise) reservation abolished?
Actually both the media houses (India today & TOI) are wrong here. Both of them have reported news without any FACTS:-
India Today news is for sure FAKE because there is no official announcement regarding abolishment of reservation system by UP government!
Even Times of India news is not completely genuine because there is indeed a reservation in UPCMET qualification/NEET ranking as mentioned on official websites. However, that reservation is not QUOTA (Percentage) based but is MARKS based (50% for General & 40% for SC/ST). Reservation is reservation, even if it is based on Marks
Let us tell you, ACTUALLY NOTHING HAPPENED. Whatever is continuing since 1950 will continue as it is! There is no action as such on QUOTA based reservation or MARKS based reservation.
To conclude, we can say that don’t believe everything you see on the internet. The same media house might come up with 2 contrast headlines! If you don’t believe us, check out what India Today reported this afternoon..
