Things might not be as calm as they seem inside Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Former cricketers Michael Vaughan and Simon Doull are of the opinion that current captain Ruturaj Gaikwad could be feeling “threatened” by the presence of Sanju Samson in the squad.
The conversation came up during a show where Michael Vaughan directly asked Simon Doull whether Ruturaj Gaikwad might feel uneasy. Simon Doull’s response was clear — “Absolutely”. Michael Vaughan then explained the situation further, pointing out the unique dynamic within the team.
Ruturaj Gaikwad is one of the youngest captains in the IPL and has done a decent job so far. CSK has shown faith in him as a leader. However, the franchise has also signed Sanju Samson who is not only a wicketkeeper but also an experienced and successful captain. This creates a tricky situation, supporting Ruturaj Gaikwad while also bringing in someone who could potentially replace him in the future.
Michael Vaughan highlighted the bigger picture by referencing CSK legend MS Dhoni. Dhoni led the team for years as a wicketkeeper-captain with huge success. Now, with Sanju Samson fitting a similar profile, there is speculation that he could be seen as Dhoni’s long-term successor. This could naturally make Ruturaj Gaikwad feel like he needs to constantly prove himself.
Sanju Samson’s leadership record backs up the discussion. During his time with Rajasthan Royals, he was the longest-serving captain and one of their most successful in terms of win percentage. He even led the team to the IPL final in 2022, showing his ability to handle pressure.
However, his start with CSK in the IPL 2026 hasn’t been great. Sanju Samson has managed back-to-back single-digit scores, which has increased the pressure on him. Simon Doull admitted that it’s a tough situation, especially after such a big trade where CSK gave away two high-quality players to bring him in.
Simon Doull also spoke about the emotional side. Being from Kerala, Sanju Samson might feel more comfortable playing in the South and would naturally want to perform well for his new team. At the same time, expectations are huge, not just because of the trade but also because of what the franchise might see in him for the future.
Still, Simon Doull believes Sanju Samson has the ability to bounce back. He pointed out Sanju Samson’s recent form in the 2026 T20 World Cup, where he scored three consecutive half-centuries. That performance is a reminder of his potential.
