Twelve years after the release of Raanjhanaa, actor Dhanush took a moment to reflect on his Bollywood debut during a special fan screening commemorating the film’s anniversary. Though now remembered as a cult favourite, the Tamil star revealed that the project nearly fell apart before it even began. The reason, surprisingly, wasn’t creative hesitation, it was financial.
Looking back, Dhanush admitted that the initial offer for Raanjhanaa came with significant challenges. The production didn’t have the budget to hire him as the lead. Despite this, director Aanand L Rai was determined. Dhanush acknowledged that Aanand L Rai could have cast many other actors but he was unwavering in his conviction that Dhanush was the right person to play Kundan, the passionate young man from Varanasi whose unrelenting love spirals into heartbreak and political turmoil.
In Dhanush’s own words, Aanand L Rai didn’t just believe in the character, he backed it with personal sacrifice. He shared that the director went beyond standard protocol, even investing his own money into the film to ensure Dhanush could lead it. Rai’s commitment and clarity of vision stood out. Despite every reason to take a safer route, he remained fixed on bringing Kundan to life through Dhanush.
For the actor who already had a formidable reputation in Tamil cinema, this foray into Bollywood was unexpectedly intimidating. He recalled feeling a new kind of fear, unlike anything he had experienced before. Even when people had written him off in the past, he hadn’t felt shaken. But this time was different. The responsibility weighed heavily on him. The stakes were not just professional, they were personal. He prayed intensely, hoping the film wouldn’t let down the man who had taken such a bold risk on him.
In the end, the risk proved worthwhile. Raanjhanaa connected deeply with audiences, praised for its emotional depth, character-driven storytelling and bold narrative. According to Dhanush, the film’s magic lay not just in its love story between Kundan and Zoya but in the passion of two people, himself and Rai, who believed in something larger than themselves. He described it as a collaboration driven by a kind of madness, one that ultimately created a modern classic.
The film, which also featured Sonam Kapoor, Abhay Deol, Swara Bhaskar and Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub became a milestone in director Aanand L Rai’s career. Since then, Dhanush and Rai have continued their creative partnership, notably with the 2021 film Atrangi Re. Their upcoming project Tere Ishq Mein is expected to revisit the emotional and geographical landscape of Raanjhanaa, continuing a cinematic journey that started with one brave decision in 2013.
