A gripping true story once left a young man shaken during a train journey in the 1990s. Decades later, that same story would go on to launch his career, and now, it’s taking him all the way to Hollywood. Indian director Nikhil Nagesh Bhat, best known for the hit action film Kill, has landed one of the biggest breaks of his career, helming Deadlocked, an upcoming action thriller starring Oscar winner Jamie Foxx, produced by Amazon MGM Studios and set to stream globally on Prime Video.

Nikhil Nagesh Bhat’s journey to this moment has been anything but ordinary. Born in Patna, Bihar, he later moved to Pune, Maharashtra, to pursue his education. Not much is publicly known about his personal life but his work as a filmmaker has always been deeply influenced by real experiences and a genuine love for storytelling.

He stepped into the industry with the Hindi film Saluun back in 2009. In the years that followed, he explored a variety of genres and formats, directing the Netflix film Brij Mohan Amar Rahe, web series like Rasbhari and The Gone Game, and the 2022 film Hurdang. While each of these projects was well-received, widespread recognition took a little longer to arrive.

That recognition finally came with Kill, starring Lakshya and Raghav Juyal. The intense action thriller premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2023, where it was named first runner-up in the People’s Choice Award for the Midnight Madness category. Critics across the world praised its raw, high-energy action sequences and the film went on to pick up several award nominations.

What makes Kill even more remarkable is where its story came from. The film was inspired by a real and traumatic experience from Nikhil Nagesh Bhat’s own life. As a young man traveling by train between Patna and Pune in the mid-1990s, he found himself caught in the middle of an actual train robbery. Years later, he channeled that frightening memory into the gripping narrative that eventually became Kill.

In 2023, Nikhil Nagesh Bhat also directed Apurva, a survival thriller featuring Tara Sutaria, Abhishek Banerjee, Rajpal Yadav and Dhairya Karwa. The film revealed another dimension of his craft, combining tension and suspense with genuine emotional depth.

Now, Nikhil Nagesh Bhat is gearing up for his biggest step yet, his Hollywood debut with Deadlocked. The film centers on a grieving former Marine who, while serving jury duty, is thrust into action after a courthouse is taken hostage. Produced by Amazon MGM Studios, the action thriller will release globally on Prime Video.
