On Friday, two female students of BBM 2nd year have been suspended from their college as their photos with the bottles of beer and wine are getting circulated on WhatsApp. The two girls are the students of Shri Subrahmanyeshwara College in Sullia taluk, Dakshina Kannada district.
However, the parents of the girls have denied any appearance of girls at any party but the photo is going rounds on WhatsApp for a month now. The event has taken place outside the college campus; still the college suspended these two girls after the pressure was mounted by local citizens and students organization.
KSS Temple Trust manages the college, the temple management is under the control of state government, Basavaraju, who is the trust president and Assistant Commissioner of Puttur told TOI, “He has informed me about the incident. I’ll go to the college and inquire into the matter and seek a report,” he added. College vice-principal M Manmohan said action has been taken against students as part of the college’s discipline. “The college has received information that the girls’ photos were circulated on WhatsApp. A students’ organization and local people have demanded action against the girls. The principal suspended the girls and has initiated an inquiry into the issue.”
Till now, the parents have not made any complaint about the photo on WhatsApp but the social workers have started speaking against the action taken by the college. Vidya Dinker, a social worker has asked the college that how they can take a disciplinary action against any students for an occurrence outside college campus.
Vidya said, “The action of the college authorities is not constitutional. They must take a view which is correct as per the law. It is not right on the college’s part to act against the girls as per the view imposed by certain organizations.”
