“Easy To Sit….,”, Ex-Fielding Coach Defends Yashasvi Jaiswal Amid Backlash For Dropped Catches

The Indian cricketer Yashasvi Jaiswal is getting slammed a lot because of his poor fielding in Headingley test and amidst this criticism, he has found a supporter as former India fielding coach R Sridhar has come forward in support of the young batter. Yashasvi endured a rough few days on the field despite starting his England tour on a high note with a century in the first innings.

Yashasvi Jaiswal, playing his first Test series in English conditions, dropped crucial catches early in England’s innings, handing lifelines to both Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope off Jasprit Bumrah’s bowling. These missed chances proved costly as Duckett, Pope and later Harry Brook all went on to become England’s top-scorers in that innings.

R Sridhar acknowledged that while Yashasvi Jaiswal had poor outings in Leeds and earlier in Melbourne, these were isolated performances that shouldn’t overshadow his overall fielding abilities. He described the youngster as an “excellent gully fielder” and pointed to his sharp catching display in the Kanpur Test against Bangladesh as evidence of his capabilities.

Sridhar stressed that it’s easy to criticise from the comfort of a commentary box without understanding the difficulty of fielding in unfamiliar, often harsh conditions. He noted that many players are encountering such challenging environments for the first time and added that Leeds, in particular, was extremely cold and windy during India’s fielding stints, factors that television cameras captured but armchair critics might overlook.

Yashasvi Jaiswal was not alone in his struggles. Key players like Ravindra Jadeja and vice-captain Rishabh Pant also dropped important catches, contributing to what Sridhar termed India’s worst fielding display in recent memory. Misfields added to the concerns, including one at mid-off by Shardul Thakur that stood out during England’s charge.

While Sridhar defended individual players to an extent, he was firm in stating that the general standard of ground fielding on display was “not acceptable”. According to him, ground fielding, unlike catching, is largely within the player’s control. He elaborated that players need to develop the awareness of when to attack the ball, when to play safe and how to respond to environmental cues like wind direction, which plays a significant role in outfield movement and anticipation.

Looking ahead, fielding is expected to become a core focus for Shubman Gill and his team as they prepare for the second Test at Edgbaston.

Given the crucial role of sharp fielding in close contests, Sridhar’s insights underline the importance of both technical preparation and environmental adaptability for a team still finding its rhythm under new leadership.

Hopefully we will see improvement in India’s fielding in the next test.
