Team India marked the first anniversary of their T20 World Cup 2024 victory with a lively celebration in Birmingham, filled with humour, camaraderie and plenty of cake. A video released by the BCCI showcased the joyous mood within the squad as players and staff came together to commemorate the milestone.
Two cakes were brought in for the occasion, adorned with the inscriptions “Team India” and “Champions of T20 WC 2024”. Captain Shubman Gill, who wasn’t a member of the victorious World Cup squad, playfully nudged Mohammed Siraj forward, also calling for Yashasvi Jaiswal to join. Amid laughter and gentle pushes, Arshdeep Singh, one of India’s standout bowlers during the tournament alongside Jasprit Bumrah, was initially chosen to do the honors but he stepped aside, leaving the task to Bumrah and Siraj. Bumrah, reminded by his teammates of his Player of the Series accolade, eventually joined Siraj in cutting the cake.
The festivities took a humorous turn when Rishabh Pant along with Bumrah and Siraj teased Ravindra Jadeja by claiming they were also celebrating a year since his retirement. Ravindra Jadeja quickly responded with a laugh, clarifying that he had only stepped away from T20 Internationals and not from all the formats, prompting another round of chuckles.

Ravindra Jadeja had experienced a tough time during the World Cup but India’s squad depth ensured the campaign remained flawless. Alongside stalwarts Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, Jadeja announced his retirement from T20Is after the title win. Unlike the other two who also retired from Test cricket in May, Ravindra Jadeja has continued to be part of the Test setup despite ongoing speculation about his future in ODIs and Tests.
Looking ahead, India is preparing for the second Test against England at Edgbaston, starting July 2. Rishabh Pant shone in the first Test at Headingley and will aim to continue his form. The team also hopes for stronger performances from Jadeja and Siraj, especially as Bumrah’s availability remains uncertain due to workload concerns.
With Sunday designated as a rest day, the team is expected to undergo a rigorous training session on Monday, followed by a lighter one on Tuesday as they gear up for the crucial match.
