Emraan Hashmi has stirred excitement among fans once again with updates on sequels to two of his most iconic films. Earlier this year, the actor marked his birthday by announcing the much-anticipated sequel to Awarapan, a 2007 romantic drama that has long been praised as one of his most memorable performances. And now, while promoting his upcoming film Ground Zero, he has hinted at a potential revival of the Jannat franchise as well.
In a recent conversation during a promotional interview, Emraan reflected on the legacy of Awarapan and Jannat. He acknowledged the strong emotional connection audiences have developed with these films over the years, saying that while there is interest in bringing Jannat back to the big screen, he and the team are being cautious. He emphasised that the intention is not to create a sequel just for the sake of continuation but rather to wait until they have a script that truly does justice to the original’s legacy.
Emraan officially confirmed that Awarapan 2 is moving forward, revealing that the script has been finalised and the team is preparing to begin shooting around July or August. He explained that the film has grown in popularity over the years, despite its underwhelming box office performance when it was first released. It found its audience gradually, through television, Internet platforms and word of mouth, which helped it attain cult status. He believes that this enduring affection makes a sequel not only viable but necessary, provided it’s done with care.
The original Awarapan, directed by Mohit Suri, featured Emraan alongside Shriya Saran, Mrinalini Sharma and Ashutosh Rana. Though the film didn’t achieve major commercial success during its theatrical run, its evocative music and emotional depth eventually won it a dedicated fanbase. The songs remain popular even today, adding to the film’s timeless appeal.
As for Jannat, which first hit theatres in 2008 and starred Emraan opposite Sonal Chauhan, it holds a special place in his filmography. Discussions about a third installment are ongoing, with Emraan stressing the importance of delivering a story that meets the high expectations attached to the brand.
Currently, Emraan is gearing up for the release of his next project, Ground Zero, directed by Tejas Deoskar. The film is slated to hit theatres on April 25 and features an ensemble team of producers backing its production. As anticipation builds for both Awarapan 2 and the potential return of Jannat, fans of Emraan Hashmi have much to look forward to.
