A 21-year engineering student from Gujarat, identified as Jigneshsinh Parmar, has come under police scrutiny after allegedly sending d*ath threats to India men’s cricket team head coach Gautam Gambhir. Reports suggest that Jigneshsinh Parmar was apprehended by a Central District Police team and interrogated regarding the threatening emails. His family has reportedly stated that he struggles with mental health issues.
Authorities indicated that the threatening email originated from a suspicious Gmail account and emphasised that a deeper investigation is underway. A senior police official confirmed that Jigneshsinh Parmar is indeed a student and that claims about his mental health are being considered as part of the inquiry.
The threats came on a particularly dark day when India was reeling from a d*adly t*rrorist att@ck in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam, where 26 lives were lost. On the same day, Gautam Gambhir reportedly received two alarming emails, both carrying a chilling message warning of harm.
Officials stated that they were alerted to the threats through a formal complaint, accompanied by a request to ensure the safety and security of Gautam Gambhir and his family. While acknowledging the seriousness of the situation, authorities refrained from sharing specific details about Gautam Gambhir’s security measures, noting only that he is already under police protection.
The former cricketer, who was instrumental in India’s 2007 T20 World Cup and 2011 ODI World Cup victories, has transitioned successfully into leadership roles, most recently guiding India to a Champions Trophy win earlier this year in Dubai. His public life, however, has often drawn unwanted attention. This incident echoes a similar episode from 2022, when Gambhir faced threats that led to a significant tightening of his security.
As the investigation continues, the authorities remain cautious about drawing conclusions, focusing instead on verifying the authenticity of the threats and the mental condition of the suspect.
