India and Pakistan are arch rivals and this rivalry is pretty visible in sports, be it cricket, hockey or any other game. And if there is tension on the borders of both the countries, then this rivalry gets further intensified on the field as well.
However, one thing that should always be a part of the game is sportsmanship and Indians have once again proved that they not only win matches but also hearts.
India defeated Pakistan by 3-2 in the Asians Champion trophy hockey finals and there’s one Indian player who has made some new Pakistani fans with his gesture of honesty. We are talking about none other than Birendra Lakra!!
In the final quarter of the game, players of both the teams were contesting for the ball in the Indian penalty circle; the ball touched Birendra’s leg after which Pakistanis appealed for a penalty corner.
The referee was not confident about the appeal so now it was on the Pakistanis to go for final referral if they were completely sure. Just then, Birendra went to the referee and informed him that the ball had indeed touched his leg which stopped Pakistanis from wasting a referral.
After the game, not only each Pakistani player greeted Birendra but also Pakistani coach K M Junaid met him and hugged him for his gesture of honesty and sportsmanship.
We are proud of our hockey team, as they not only won the tournament but also showed true sportsmanship!
