India’s heavy 76-run loss to South Africa in the T20 World Cup 2026 Super 8 clash has sparked serious debate and former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif hasn’t held back.
Playing at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, India were chasing 188 but folded for just 111. One of the biggest talking points from the match was the decision to leave out Axar Patel and bring in off-spinner Washington Sundar. Sundar bowled two overs for 17 runs without taking a wicket and scored 11 off 11 balls.
Captain Suryakumar Yadav described the change as a tactical decision, while batting coach Sitanshu Kotak explained that the move was made to counter South Africa’s left-handed batters. But Mohammad Kaif believes the call reflected panic rather than planning.
He pointed out that great captains like MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma usually backed a settled playing XI instead of making changes based purely on match-ups. According to Kaif, successful teams focus on balance and trust rather than reacting to the opposition’s line-up.
Mohammad Kaif also reminded fans that India didn’t rely on extra off-spinners like Sundar or Ravichandran Ashwin when they won the T20 World Cup 2024. He questioned why Axar Patel, who had taken two wickets against Pakistan earlier in the tournament before being rested against Namibia, was suddenly dropped.
Highlighting Axar Patel’s performances in crucial ICC matches, Mohammad Kaif referred to his Player of the Match display in the 2024 semifinal against England, where he dismissed key players including Jonny Bairstow, Jos Buttler and Moeen Ali, the third one being a left-hander, which challenges the match-up argument.
He also compared Axar Patel’s absence to the impact made by South Africa’s left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj, who picked up three wickets in the Super 8 match.
Mohammad Kaif went further, saying Axar Patel deserved more credit for his all-round contribution in the 2024 T20 World Cup final against the same opponents. He noted that while Virat Kohli scored at a strike rate of 128 in that final, Axar struck at 150 and smashed four sixes in a vital cameo. In Kaif’s view, Axar’s role in both the semifinal and final victories was underappreciated.
For Mohammad Kaif, the issue isn’t just one team selection. It’s about trust. He believes that instead of sidelining Axar Patel due to concerns over left-handers, the team should have backed him to improve and deliver. To him, the late change signaled nerves, especially when South Africa, despite losing the previous final to India, appeared calmer and more composed on the big stage.
