For a player once known for redefining T20 batting, Suryakumar Yadav is going through a difficult phase that has left fans and experts searching for answers. Despite leading India successfully in the shortest format, the Indian T20I captain’s own performances with the bat have dipped sharply, adding pressure ahead of the upcoming T20 World Cup.
Former Mumbai and Railways wicketkeeper Sulakshan Kulkarni believes the issue has little to do with technique. According to him, Suryakumar Yadav’s struggles are more about approach and decision-making rather than any technical flaw. He feels the constant scrutiny has masked the fact that SKY still has the skills that once made him one of the most feared batters in the world.
The numbers, however, paint a worrying picture. Over 21 matches last year, Suryakumar Yadav scored only 218 runs at a low average and a below-par strike rate. Since taking over the captaincy after India’s T20 World Cup triumph in 2024, his influence as a batter has noticeably declined, even though the team continues to win matches.
Sulakshan Kulkarni pointed out that limited time at the crease can disrupt a batter’s rhythm, especially in T20 cricket. When top-order batters are dismissed quickly or matches finish early, players like Suryakumar Yadav sometimes do not get enough balls to settle in. This was evident during the Asia Cup, where he showed glimpses of his old self with an unbeaten 47 against Pakistan, which remained his highest score of 2025.
That knock also highlighted another concern. Suryakumar Yadav crossed the 30-run mark only twice during the year and was dismissed within his first ten balls on several occasions. Sulakshan Kulkarni feels this is where the focus should be. Spending more time in the middle, even for a few extra deliveries, could help him regain confidence and rhythm.

He believes that if Suryakumar Yadav allows himself to face more balls, runs will follow naturally. A longer stay at the crease would not only help the team but could also bring back the fluent, fearless batter Indian fans know so well.
