Finally The 1-Day Ban On NDTV Has Been Put On Hold! Twitterati Has A Reason To Celebrate Today!

Information and Broadcasting Minister, Venkaiah Naidu had imposed a 1 day ban on NDTV (On 9th of November) because of its sensitive coverage of Pathankot Attacks. Yes, government is of the opinion that NDTV’s coverage revealed some “Strategically sensitive” details, which could have put the nation in danger. Terrorists could easily have misused this information, thereby risking the lives of civilians and defense personnel.

However, different people had different views on this; Arvind Kejriwal slammed BJP government and warned other channels to not “Speak against Modiji”, so as to avoid such consequences. On the other hand, yesterday, we saw how the owner of Zee TV slammed NDTV and extended his support to the ban.

But wait! There is a twist in the case; this 1-day ban of NDTV has been put on hold now! Why? Because this decision welcomed lot of opposition and protests from the media. Even though other channels had covered the news in a similar fashion, why was only NDTV banned? Was it some political game?

Well, NDTV had challenged this decision in court and results seem to be in favor of it. NDTV had made strong claims that it was not the only channel to cover this way; even other channels and newspapers had done “Sensitive” coverage. However, Naidu too had his own arguments; he stated that this ban would protect the security of the country.

Editors and journalists from all corners of the country have condemned this ban, and related it to that “Emergency of 1970s” wherein freedom of press was violated.

Reports say that

“After a large protest held by journalists from every major media organization in Delhi, the Press Council of India said the government’s action amounts to uncalled for censorship at a time when press freedom is already under increasing threat in the country.”

Freedom of press holds utmost importance! Political influences are no more needed in the country now. So finally this ban is put on hold and journalists have a sigh of relief.
