India’s e-commerce leader Flipkart is now planning to shift its focus into the groceries space and also revive its online furniture business. The company is planning to expand its product range to take on the global e-commerce giant Amazon. Indian online marketplace leader Flipkart is also going to join the make-in-India initiative.

Flipkart Chief Executive Binny Bansal is building a team for the Make-In-India bandwagon; this will allow the wide range of investments under the Indian made private labelled goods initiative. This move will also allow Flipkart to garner favorable attention from the central government that promotes local manufacturing.

Binny Bansal, Chief Executive of Flipkart, said that India’s e-commerce top player is planning to experiment with the grocery sales in the coming year. Based on how well the move does, the company is planning to scale up operations over a three year period.

Binny Bansal believes there’s a space for the online grocery market. He further said,

There is definitely room to build a profitable grocery business, but it’s hard. That doesn’t mean it’s not possible, but it’s hard.

However Amazon has already began experimenting with the grocery sales in some selected cities. More and more people in the country are now preferring the online market to buy anything.

Flipkart is also planning to relaunch its furniture store to add more variety. Bansal said,

You will see more furniture in three-four month. kart aims to provide furniture assembly services that are key to making headway in this segment.

Flipkart currently has over one lakh merchants, by the inclusion of Make-In-India program, Flipkart will feature goods ranging from electronics to apparel made by local manufacturers and branded as private label products.
