From Adipurush To Zero, 11 Big Budget Bollywood Movies That Were Huge Flops At The Box-Office

Bollywood is one of the biggest movie industries of the world as a big number of movies are made every year and a huge amount of money is invested in these movies. While some films recover the investment, few earn big profits and several flicks which are not loved by the audiences failed to even recover the money invested in them.

1. Samrat Prithviraj (2022):

Released in 2022, the movie starred Akshay Kumar and Manushi Chhillar in the lead roles and it is based on the life-story of Indian King Prithviraj Chauhan. Directed by Chandraprakash Dwivedi, “Samrat Prithviraj” was said to be made on a big budget of Rs. 300 crore but the movie earned only Rs. 90 crore worldwide which was a big blow for the producers Yash Raj Films.

2. 83 (2021):

Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone starrer “83” which was based on India’s win of 1983 Cricket World Cup was expected to earn huge as India is a cricket crazy nation but it failed in pulling the crowd towards the theatres. The movie was said to be made at a budget of Rs. 225 crore approx. but its lifetime earnings were around Rs. 193 crore.

3. Thugs of Hindostan (2018):

Amitabh Bachchan and Aamir Khan starrer “Thugs of Hindostan” is one of the biggest flops of Bollywood as the movie is said to be made on the budget of Rs. 300 crore but it managed to earn only Rs. 150 crore. The flick also starred Katrina Kaif and Fatima Sana Shaikh in important roles and was directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya.

4. Zero (2018):

Shah Rukh Khan, Anushka Sharma and Katrina Kaif starrer “Zero” was directed by Aanand L Rai and a lot was expected from this movie as SRK tried something unique by playing the role of a dwarf in the film. “Zero” was made on a budget of Rs. 200 crore but it earned Rs. 186 crore approx. worldwide.

5. Raju Chacha (2000):

“Raju Chacha” starred Ajay Devgn and Kajol in the lead roles and Rishi Kapoor also played a cameo in the movie. The film was directed by Ajay Devgn and though it flopped at the box-office, still it managed to achieve a cult status among the Indian kids. The movie is said to be made on a budget of Rs. 25 crore which was a big amount at that time and it was able to earn only Rs. 20-21 crore.

6. Roop ki Rani Choron ka Raja (1993)

Anil Kapoor, Jackie Shroff, Sridevi and Anupam Kher starrer “Roop ki Rani Choron ka Raja” which was directed by Satish Kaushik was one of the most expensive movies of its times. In 1990s, most of the films were made in the budget of Rs. 1.5-2 crore but producer Boney Kapoor had spent Rs. 9 crore on this movie. However, it turned out to be a disaster and Boney Kapoor was broke after the film.

7. Dhaakad (2022):

Kangana Ranaut played the lead role in this action movie and nobody expected that it will fail so badly at the box-office. Directed by Razneesh Ghai, “Dhaakad” was made on a budget of Rs. 95 crore but it managed to earn only Rs. 2.58 crore.

8. Bombay Velvet (2015):

“Bombay Velvet” was directed by Anurag Kashyap and the famous producer-director Karan Johar also acted in this movie along with Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma. Made on the budget of Rs. 118 crore, this highly awaited film earned only Rs. 22 crore as this period gangster drama failed in exciting the audiences.

9. Ra. One (2011):

Shah Rukh Khan and Kareena Kapoor starrer “Ra. One” which was a superhero movie was SRK’s dream project. It was made on a budget of Rs. 130 crore but it managed to earn only Rs. 113 crore.

10. Adipurush (2023):

Prabhas, Kriti Sanon and Saif Ali Khan starrer “Adipurush” was based on the Hindu epic Ramayana but the makers were slammed heavily for changing the context, poor characterization and for poor VFX. Directed by Om Raut, it was one of the most expensive movies of the Indian film industry as Rs. 500 crore were invested for making “Adipurush” and its lifetime earnings were around Rs. 350 crore approx.

11. Andaz Apna Apna (1994):

Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, Raveena Tandon and Karisma Kapoor starrer “Andaz Apna Apna” is certainly one of the best comedy movies that have ever been made in Bollywood. However, Rajkumar Santoshi’s flick failed in pulling the crowds towards the theatres when it was released and the producers had to suffer heavy losses. The movie was made on the budget of Rs. 8.65 crore and it could earn only Rs. 2.90 crore at the box-office.
