Founded by three inseparable college best friends, SPANKERS was initially the name of their famously mischievous college volleyball team. From the campus watchman to the professors and even the trustees, everyone knew the trio by this moniker. Their shared identity, synonymous with spirited defiance and high-energy antics, would later become the foundation of a serious business.
The Spark: A Night Out Before the CAT
The brand’s origin moment arrived not with a business plan, but with a simple t-shirt. While preparing for the challenging CAT exam a crucial stepping stone for their future the three friends were huddled together for a night-out study session. One friend, fresh from a trip to Mumbai, brought back a collection of cool t-shirts from the trendy Colaba area.
“We realized those designs were unlike anything we saw in Surat,” one of the founders recalls. “Right there, in the middle of our CAT preparation, we had an epiphany: we could sell these.”
The Flea Market Frenzy: 80 Pieces in 2 Days
With a gut feeling and zero business experience, the friends took the plunge. They visited Mumbai, purchased a modest 80 pieces of t-shirts, and secured a stall at a popular local exhibition, “TOS (Taste of Surat).”
The response was immediate and overwhelming. In just two days, their entire stock of 80 pieces was sold out.
“We were ecstatic, but also immediately panicked,” the founder laughs. “We were stocked out with 28 days left on the flea market clock!”
This kicked off a relentless 30-day routine that defined their early struggle.

Morning: Attending college classes
Day: Urgent travel to Mumbai to procure more stock.
Evening: Rushing back to Surat to sell at the TOS flea market.
Driven by necessity and a burning desire to succeed, they often made the demanding Mumbai trips without informing their parents, fearing they would worry about their health and lack of sleep. It was a baptism by fire a true lesson in the meaning of the word ‘hustle.’

Leveling Up: From Trader to Brand Owner
After the success of the flea market, the friends continued to balance their college internships with their burgeoning side project. The next logical step was clear: they needed to stop trading and start branding.
The transition was fraught with challenges. Creating their own designs was the easy part; finding a manufacturer who could deliver both quality and consistency was the biggest hurdle. After an exhaustive search and countless samples, they finally found a partner, though the initial production run was costly.
Their first self-branded collection debuted at a flea market in Vadodara and was met with instant praise. Customers loved the unique designs and the feel of the garment. This validated their vision, but the cost structure was still a major concern.
“We wanted to sell a premium product at an average price,” they explained. “To achieve that, we had to rethink our entire supply chain.”
They began experimenting, outsourcing fabric, and doing job work for printing, stitching, and packing from different vendors. While this offered some control, the costs remained stubbornly high.

The Ultimate Transformation: Own Manufacturing
The final, critical pivot came when the trio decided to take full control of their product. Today, SPANKERS boasts its own in-house manufacturing unit. This strategic move allowed them to drastically optimize costs while maintaining the highest quality standards, the exact balance they had struggled to find for years.
“Now, the journey has come full circle. People know SPANKERS really well,” the team proudly states. “They love our design, the quality of our product, and the energy we put into our marketing. It all stems from those hectic 30 days and the bond of three friends who dared to skip sleep for a dream.”
