History welcomed a new name as Suryakumar Yadav led India to a memorable World Cup victory. On Sunday, March 8, Suryakumar Yadav became the fourth Indian captain to win a World Cup title. India’s triumph in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 final placed him in an elite list alongside Kapil Dev, MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma.

Kapil Dev guided India to their first ever World Cup title in 1983 at Lord’s on June 25. MS Dhoni later led the team to two global titles, the 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2011 ODI World Cup. Rohit Sharma added his name to the list by captaining India to the 2024 T20 World Cup victory.
Now, under Suryakumar Yadav’s leadership, India defeated New Zealand by 96 runs to lift the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 trophy. The final was played at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, where India delivered a powerful all-round performance.
India piled up a massive total of 255/5. Sanju Samson starred with a brilliant 89, while Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan chipped in with impressive half-centuries. The bowlers then took control and bowled New Zealand out for just 159 runs in 19 overs.
Jasprit Bumrah led the bowling attack with an outstanding spell, taking four wickets for just 15 runs in his four overs. Axar Patel also played a key role, dismissing three New Zealand batters.
This victory marked India’s eighth ICC title in men’s cricket. The collection includes three T20 World Cups, two ODI World Cups and three ICC Champions Trophy titles. While MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma have won one-one Champions Trophy title each, Sourav Ganguly has also led the Indian team to Champions Trophy win in 2002, jointly with Sri Lanka.
India’s success in global cricket goes beyond men’s senior tournaments. The country has also won one Women’s ODI World Cup, six Under-19 World Cups in men’s cricket and two Under-19 World Cups in women’s cricket, highlighting a strong legacy across generations.
