India’s defeat against the West Indies in Ranchi has once again raised questions about the challenges bowlers face in modern T20 cricket. Following the visitors’ successful chase of 250 runs, Indian men’s team head coach Gautam Gambhir stressed that bowlers deserve a fair chance and must not be overlooked in a format increasingly dominated by big hitting.

Gautam Gambhir made these comments after the second T20I against the West Indies on Friday, when the visitors chased down India’s huge target of 250 runs to secure a six-wicket victory with nine balls to spare. Heavy dew made the ball slippery, making it difficult for Indian bowlers to maintain their grip and control.

The West Indies captain Shai Hope delivered a remarkable performance, scoring an unbeaten 102 off just 45 deliveries to guide his team to victory.

Speaking at the post-match press conference, Gautam Gambhir said that everyone wants to see an exciting contest between bat and ball. While fans enjoy watching sixes and fours, he believes bowlers should also get a fair opportunity to showcase their skills.

The Indian head coach pointed out that the bowlers have worked extremely hard to reach the international level and earn their place in the dressing room. Their careers and efforts deserve the same respect as those of batters. He emphasised that a balanced contest would allow both batters and bowlers to perform at their best.

Gautam Gambhir also rejected the idea that the toss was the main reason behind India’s defeat. Instead, he stressed that a team must learn to handle difficult conditions and find solutions when bowling becomes challenging. He acknowledged that flat pitches and heavy dew can make life difficult for bowlers. However, he believes India, as a world-champion team, must continue improving and develop strategies to stop opposition batters even when conditions are not favourable.

Gautam Gambhir highlighted that India had an opportunity to put pressure on the West Indies early in the innings. The visitors lost two wickets in the first over and three wickets within the first six overs but India couldn’t prevent them from completing the chase.

Despite India’s defeat, Gambhir praised the West Indies for their outstanding batting performance. He specifically acknowledged Shai Hope’s innings and recognised the quality of the West Indies batting line-up, particularly in the T20 format.

Gautam Gambhir’s comments underline his belief that Indian bowlers must continue working hard and adapting to challenging conditions. While high-scoring matches and powerful batting performances have become common in T20 cricket, he wants the game to offer a fair contest in which bowlers also have a genuine chance to make an impact.
