Indian cricket is entering another important phase in its selection setup, with Ajit Agarkar’s tenure as chairman of selectors officially coming to an end. A day after the BCCI invited applications for his replacement, India head coach Gautam Gambhir shared a heartfelt message for Agarkar, thanking him for their time working together.

Gautam Gambhir took to X to praise Ajit Agarkar’s approach and highlighted the three ICC trophies India won during his tenure. He said it was an honour to work with Agarkar and credited his strong belief in putting the team ahead of everything else. Gambhir also expressed confidence that Ajit Agarkar’s contribution would be remembered positively in history before wishing him well for his future.

Ajit Agarkar’s time as chairman of the men’s selection committee saw India win three major ICC titles. These included the 2024 T20 World Cup, the 2025 Champions Trophy and the 2026 T20 World Cup. His tenure also coincided with the retirement of several of India’s biggest names. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli retired from both Tests and T20Is, while Ravindra Jadeja retired from T20Is. Ravichandran Ashwin and Cheteshwar Pujara also brought their international careers across formats to an end during this period.
With Ajit Agarkar stepping down, former India spinner Pragyan Ojha is currently serving as the interim chairman of the selection panel. RP Singh, Shiv Sundar Das and Ajay Ratra are the other members of the committee. The BCCI officially invited applications for the chairman’s position on Tuesday, with October 14 set as the deadline for submissions.

Pragyan Ojha is considered one of the leading candidates to take over the permanent role. However, reports have also suggested that former India wicketkeeper-batter Parthiv Patel could join the selection panel. If that happens, Parthiv Patel could become the leading candidate based on seniority, as he has played 25 Tests for India, compared with Pragyan Ojha’s 24 Tests.
The eligibility criteria announced by the BCCI have remained unchanged. Applicants must have played at least 7 Tests, 30 First-Class matches, or 10 ODIs and 20 First-Class matches. They must also have retired from the game at least five years before applying.
The new chairman and selection committee will have several important responsibilities, including identifying and developing strong bench strength for Indian cricket. Their main task will also be to select the best possible senior men’s national team as India looks ahead to the next phase of its international cricket journey.
We wish all the best to Ajit Agarkar for his future endeavours!
