New Zealand’s fielding came under the spotlight after their defeat against India in the first T20I in Christchurch but all-rounder Glenn Phillips was not pleased when asked about his team’s dropped catches. He questioned the number of chances being counted as drops and argued that not every missed attempt should be treated as a dropped catch.

During the post-match interaction, an Indian reporter appeared to ask Glenn Phillips about four dropped catches by New Zealand. Mitchell Santner failed to hold on to a difficult chance offered by Axar Patel in the 12.5th over. In the 14th over, Matt Henry also missed a tough return catch off Axar Patel. Finn Allen then dropped Shreyas Iyer in the 14.6th over, while Lockie Ferguson failed to complete a difficult catch off an outside edge from Naman Dhir in the 17.6th over, allowing the ball to reach the boundary.

However, Glenn Phillips disagreed with counting Lockie Ferguson’s attempt as a dropped catch, arguing that the bowler had barely managed to get his hand to the ball. Glenn Phillips initially acknowledged that dropped catches are part of the game but then questioned which four chances were being discussed. He pointed out that only Mitchell Santner and Finn Allen had clearly missed their opportunities, while the other two attempts should not be classified as dropped catches because the fielders had not properly got their hands to the ball.

Another moment that came up during the discussion involved Nathan Smith, who nearly pulled off a spectacular catch near the boundary while attempting to dismiss Naman Dhir in the 16.2nd over. However, his momentum carried him over the boundary rope and the ball went for six.

Glenn Phillips reacted strongly to the suggestion that this should also be counted as a dropped catch. He questioned why such an attempt was being included in the discussion and pointed out that India had also made mistakes in the field. He insisted that any comparison of fielding performances should include only genuine dropped catches and that difficult attempts should be judged fairly.

Despite the disagreement over how the chances should be classified, fielding remained a major talking point in New Zealand’s defeat. The hosts had posted a massive total of 225 runs but failed to defend it as India completed a record-breaking successful T20I chase, winning the match by four wickets.
