Things are not going as planned for Mumbai Indians in the IPL 2026. The team suffered its fourth loss of the season on Thursday, even after putting up a strong total at the Wankhede Stadium.
Powered by a wonderful century from Quinton de Kock, Mumbai Indians posted 195/6 in their allotted overs. It looked like a competitive score but Punjab Kings chased it down comfortably in just 16.3 overs, winning the match with seven wickets in hand and continuing their unbeaten run this season.
After the loss, MI captain Hardik Pandya did not hide his disappointment. He admitted that the team needs to take a hard look at its performance and figure out what is going wrong. He suggested that the issues could be related to individual performances, team effort or even planning, and said the team would need to reassess everything carefully moving forward.
Batter Naman Dhir, who scored a half-century in the match, felt that Mumbai might have fallen slightly short of an ideal total. However, Hardik Pandya gave credit to Punjab Kings for their all-round performance. He explained that conditions played a role too, the ball behaved differently in both innings and the presence of dew later in the match made batting easier for the chasing side.
Hardik Pandya openly acknowledged that Punjab outperformed Mumbai in all the areas of the game, including batting, bowling and fielding. He also hinted that the team may need to take some tough decisions soon instead of just hoping for a turnaround. According to him, accountability is important and the team must address the tough questions if they want to improve.
With this loss, Mumbai Indians find themselves struggling in the IPL 2026 points table. They are currently placed 9th, managing only two points from five matches so far.
The team will now look to bounce back in their next game against Gujarat Titans on Monday, hoping to turn their season around before it’s too late.
