The Indian women cricket team led by Harmanpreet Kaur gave a grand farewell to the senior Indian cricketer Jhulan Goswami by whitewashing the 3-match ODI series against England as it defeated the England cricket squad in the 3rd ODI by 16 runs.
Yesterday’s match was played at Lord’s and it became a little controversial as Indian cricketer Deepti Sharma dismissed Charlie Dean (Charlotte Ellen Dean) when she was backing out of the crease even before Deepti Sharma had thrown the ball while bowling. Although this method of dismissal was earlier referred to as mankading (named after an Indian cricketer), now it is called run-out after Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) has made some amendments and the International Cricket Council also recognizes it as run-out.
While there are some especially from England who are against this method of dismissal as they feel that it is against the spirit of the game, many are of the opinion that Deepti Sharma did the right thing. The decision was sent to the third umpire who gave the verdict as out and England lost its last wicket and the match as well.
During the post-match presentation, the Indian skipper Harmanpreet Kaur was asked about the controversial dismissal and she gave a pretty savage reply as she said to the presenter that she thought he would first ask about all the 10 wickets as they were also very difficult to take. She further adds that it is a part of the game and she doesn’t feel they have done anything wrong as a player needs to take such chances.
The Indian women skipper goes on to say that she completely supports her player as she hasn’t done anything which is against the laws of the ICC and it just shows how much aware you are of what batters are doing. She concludes by saying that a win is a win and they need to enjoy it. The crowd also cheered and applauded the Indian women skipper for her statements.

As far as the match is concerned, the hosts won the toss and chose to bowl first. The Indian top order fumbled as England bowler Kate Cross was superb, she took four wickets – Shafali Verma (0), Yashika Bhatia (0), Harmanpreet Kaur (4) and of opener Smriti Mandhana as well but not before she played a brilliant innings of 50 runs (79 balls, 5 fours).
Deepti Sharma (68 runs not out, 106 balls, 7 fours) and Pooja Vastrakar (22 runs, 38 balls, 4 fours) helped their team in posing a total of 169 on the score board as the whole team got out in 45.4 overs. The Indian bowling was terrific too and there was time when the England women team lost its 9 wickets at the score of 118 and everyone thought that India would easily win the match but Charlie Dean (47 runs, 80 balls, 5 fours) and Freya Davies (10 runs not out, 29 balls, 1 four) put up a brave front and were slowly taking their team towards victory. When Deepti Sharma dismissed Charlie Dean, England needed 16 runs in 39 balls and they might have achieved the target and saved some respect by winning the last ODI. Harmanpreet Kaur was adjudged as the Player of the Series while Renuka Singh was the Player of the Match as she took 4 wickets for 29 runs.
Jhulan Goswami took 2 wickets in her 10 overs and gave away only 30 runs in her last ODI of career. All the best to Jhulan Goswami for her future endeavors!
