Has BCCI Sacked Suryakumar Yadav From India’s T20I Captaincy?

India’s T20 cricket team could soon witness a major transition, with reports indicating that a change in leadership and team composition is on the horizon. A recent report claims that Suryakumar Yadav has been relieved of his T20I captaincy responsibilities and may no longer be considered for national selection.

If the development is confirmed, the 2026 T20 World Cup final against New Zealand would become his final appearance for India. Suryakumar Yadav was appointed India’s full-time T20I captain in July 2024 after Rohit Sharma stepped down. At that time, he was ranked No. 1 in the ICC T20I batting rankings and was chosen ahead of all-rounder Hardik Pandya, who had already gained captaincy experience as a stand-in leader.

During his tenure, India enjoyed remarkable success. The team won eight straight bilateral T20I series, lifted the 2025 Asia Cup and successfully defended its T20 World Cup title in 2026. Despite these achievements, Suryakumar Yadav struggled with the bat for an extended period. From the beginning of 2025, he averaged only 12.84 across 25 T20I matches and scored just 270 runs in the 2026 IPL season.

According to the report, decision-makers within the BCCI, selection committee, team management and coach Gautam Gambhir have collectively concluded that the team should move forward under a new captain. While acknowledging the trophies won under Suryakumar Yadav’s leadership, they reportedly believe it is the right time to look ahead, considering his recent form and future plans.

Reports also suggest that Shreyas Iyer is the leading candidate to take over the captaincy. The transition could begin during India’s upcoming two-match T20I series against Ireland later this month. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar is believed to have supported Shreyas for the role for some time.

However, no official announcement has been made yet. Other contenders reportedly include Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy-winning captain Ishan Kishan, who also impressed while leading Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL 2026, along with Mumbai Indians’ Tilak Varma and Chennai Super Kings’ Sanju Samson. Axar Patel, who served as Suryakumar Yadav’s deputy during the World Cup, is also being discussed, although his chances of promotion currently appear limited.
