We all celebrated the 71st Independence Day of our country yesterday and realized the freedom our brave freedom fighters died for. We thanked them, felt proud of our country and wished for an even better future here.
But what we’ve learnt just a day after the I-Day is very shameful & heart breaking. A 12-year-old Chandigarh based girl was raped by a man on the Independence Day.
However, the time of the incident is still not clear as there are different reports from different sources.
A section of media suggests that the Class 8 student had taken a short-cut to school through the children’s traffic park in Chandigarh’s Sector 23 when a man stopped her, pulled her aside and raped her.
Chandigarh’s senior police officer, Eish Singhal was quoted as saying –
“She was on her way to school and entered the park from the back gate,”
After taking the statement from the girl, the police said only one person armed with a knife, was involved.
However as per the family members, the girl was returning home after taking part in Independence Day celebrations organised at a government model senior secondary school.
The victim told her parents about the incident as soon as she reached home. The family informed the police who took her to the spot and later for a medical examination.
The investigating officer in the case, sub-inspector Kuldeep told PTI-
“The accused, aged around 40 years, forcibly took the 12-year-old girl to the park, sexually assaulted her and fled.”
The case has been registered by the police and investigation is going on. Senior police officer, Eish Singhal said-
“We have registered a FIR, the suspect has been rounded up and investigation is underway. The girl is in a stable condition.”
The victim reportedly belongs to a poor family and her father works as a gardener.
The incident has come to light just a few days after a girl was stalked by a couple of boys in Chandigarh. The matter had become highly controversial after that due to the involvement of politicians of ruling party.
