Bollywood took a nostalgic trip down memory lane recently as the cast and crew of Dil Chahta Hai reunited in Mumbai to mark 25 years since the film changed how friendship and coming-of-age stories were told on screen. The gathering on August 28 brought together Farhan Akhtar, Ritesh Sidhwani, Aamir Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Dimple Kapadia and Sonali Kulkarni, who spent the evening reminiscing about their time making the beloved film. One of the standout moments came when Dimple Kapadia opened up about why she almost turned down her now-iconic role.

Dimple Kapadia shared that she had genuine reservations about playing Tara, largely because the character was involved in a relationship with a much younger man, something that felt unconventional at the time. What ultimately won her over was how compelling the story and character were. She admitted that she loved the narrative and found it brilliantly written, and confessed it was a bit of an ego boost that her character had a younger man falling for her, though she was quick to clarify that she wouldn’t actually recommend such a relationship in real life.

Dimple Kapadia also spoke about how uncertain she felt going into the role, revealing that she initially doubted whether she could do justice with it and even tried suggesting other actresses for the part instead. She admitted she lacked the confidence at that time to take on a role which felt both powerful and genuinely challenging for her, and joked that she kept trying to find ways to back out of it. In the end, though, she felt fortunate that things worked out the way they did, calling it a case of divine intervention overriding her own doubts.

When Dil Chahta Hai released in 2001 under Farhan Akhtar’s direction, it broke away from typical Bollywood storytelling by capturing city life and friendship in a fresh, relatable way. The film centered on three friends — Aakash, Sameer and Siddharth, played respectively by Aamir Khan, Saif Ali Khan and Akshaye Khanna — as they navigated life after college, dealing with love, shifting priorities and the natural drifting apart that comes with growing up and discovering one’s own path.
