Pat Cummins and Sunrisers Hyderabad had a night to forget in Ahmedabad. Not only did SRH suffer a crushing 82-run defeat against Gujarat Titans but captain Pat Cummins was also fined Rs 12 lakhs for maintaining a slow over-rate during the IPL 2026 clash at the Narendra Modi Stadium.

During Gujarat Titans’ innings, SRH were penalised on the field as well. Because the team failed to complete their overs in time, they were allowed to keep only four fielders outside the 30-yard circle in the closing stages of the innings. GT eventually posted 168/5 before bowling SRH out for just 86.

This was the first over-rate offence for SRH in the IPL 2026 but the franchise has already faced disciplinary issues earlier in the season. Opening batter Abhishek Sharma was previously fined 25 percent of his match fee and handed one demerit point after showing visible dissent when he was dismissed during a match against Kolkata Knight Riders in April.

The BCCI has been actively monitoring player behaviour this season. Apart from penalties for slow over-rates, dissent and obscene conduct, the board also punished Rajasthan Royals captain Riyan Parag after he was seen vaping inside the team dressing room during a live broadcast. He received a heavy fine along with a demerit point.

With multiple incidents being reported during the IPL 2026, the BCCI recently sent an advisory to all the 10 franchises warning them about repeated breaches of conduct and protocol. Although no team or individual was specifically named, the board stated that several actions by players, support staff and team officials could damage the image of the tournament and even create legal or security concerns.

The advisory also highlighted concerns about unauthorised visitors entering hotel rooms of players and warned franchises to remain alert about possible honey-trapping risks in high-profile sporting environments.

The message from the BCCI is clear — maintaining discipline both on and off the field has become a major priority during the IPL 2026.
