This decision of closing down the outlets has been taken in the CPRL board meeting which took place on June 28. CPRL, which stands for Connaught Plaza Restaurants Pvt Ltd, presently runs 168 hotels all over the country. It also ran many McDonald’s outlets in north India and eastern part of the country.

CPRL is a joint venture of McDonald’s and Vikram Bakshi but the relations are not cordial between them since 2013 when Vikram Bakshi was removed from the post of managing director and McDonald’s went to London Court of International Arbitration against Bakshi. A former MD of CPRL said,

“It’s unfortunate, but operation of 43 restaurants operated by CPRL has been temporarily suspended.”

There are 55 McDonald’s outlets in Delhi out of which 43 will be closed on Thursday. CPRL has not spoken as to why the outlets are getting closed down but as per a report in Economic Times, a source revealed,

“CPRL failed to get the mandatory regulatory health licences renewed because of the infighting between Bakshi and McDonald’s.”

As per Harish Bijoor, a brand strategist, the multinational should work on bringing an end to its legal problems and focus on its core business. He told ET, “Every passing day is a slur on the front-end brand.”

McDonald’s has already sold its business in China and Hong Kong and it may happen in India as well if the situation doesn’t improve for the multinational.

Let’s just hope that things get in place otherwise we will really miss McDonald’s.
