The Mahavir Singh Phogat article was published in 2012. Divya Rao an member of Disney’s creative team read that article and she thought it will make for a great film. She told the idea to the other members of Disney. They all instantly agreed to tell the story on the big screen.
Now Disney needed someone on board for penning down the story and to direct it. Disney approached Nitesh Tiwari for directing the film. Nitesh immediately set off for Haryana to meet Mahavir Singh Phogat and his wrestler-daughters. They Phogat family instantly gave their consent for the film.
Now Siddharth Roy Kapoor and Nitesh Tiwari approached Aamir Khan with the story of ‘Dangal’ and he loved it in first narration. But the problem at that time was that Aamir had just finished Dhoom 3 and started shooting for PK. So after finishing PK in 2014, he started preparing himself for the role of Mahavir Singh in Dangal.
